Faith Journeys........

Places of Pilgrimage

A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place for a religious reason.

A person who makes this physical and spiritual journey is known as a pilgrim

In his Gospel Luke tells us that after His death Jesus revealed Himself and His teachings to his followers during a journey on the road to Emmaus.

All religions have pilgrimage centres

  • Islam has Mecca
  • Hinduism has Benares on the River Ganges
  • Buddhism has Bodhgaya.
  • Sikhism has Amritsar
  • Jerusalem is a major pilgrimage centre for Judaism, Islam and Christianity
  • Catholicism has Lourdes

There are a number of reasons why a place would become a pilgrimage centre:

  • A pilgrimage centre may be connected with a particularly holy person
  • A place where a vision has been seen
  • A place where a relic (remains such as a bone) of a saint is kept
  • A place connected with important events in the life of a holy person or simply a place with a long history of pilgrimage

Why do people go on pilgrimage?

  • To feel some of the holiness of a place
  • To come closer to God
  • To seek God’s forgiveness
  • To show devotion to God
  • To ask for and receive God’s help (e.g. cure for illness)
